UNICEF spokesman in Colombo Gordon Weiss has called for a safe passage for Wanni civilians to move to safe areas.
He warned of a disastrous situation if they had to travel through conflict areas.
Speaking to BBC, Mr. Weiss said an agreement could be reached with the LTTE for a secure opening for these civilians.
Noting that international laws clearly state the need for a safe passage for non-combatants through a conflict area, he urged both parties to respect it.
When contacted, military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara told NethFM News that the Omanthai entry/exit point could be used for the present for that purpose.
Another secure opening would be arranged soon, he added.
