Worst natl. statistics of disappearances from Lanka - AI

Amnesty International says Sri Lanka has reported 5,516 disappearances last year in the worst national statistics referred to the UN Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances.

The London-based human rights group also says 30 new urgent action cases were identified in the island in relation to alleged disappearances.

"Disappearances are not a new phenomenon in Sri Lanka...what is disappointing is the lack of action to try to prevent them re-occurring," it said in a report

In the 25th anniversary year, marked over the weekend, the UN Working Group reported 41,257 pending cases across 78 countries.

In the first year of the Day of the Disappeared, the Working Group reported 1,733 cases of disappearances across 11 countries.

AI calls upon all states to put an end to enforced disappearance, one of the worst violations of human rights.
